Elements and Principles of Design

If you’re not a designer, it may be hard for you to explain why you like or dislike a certain design. You might like the way a layout looks, but you can’t say exactly why you like it.

Design is subjective, of course. And designers face many decisions, most of which are also subjective when creating a piece, which makes it so there’s rarely a definite right or wrong answer regarding design.

Below are the primary elements and principles that will help you better understand what constitutes good design. These are important to know because the right application of elements and principles makes for a better design, which in turn leads to a better experience. Good design engages the viewer and doesn’t take away from the main message at hand.design-01design-02
